How should the viewing process be handled?

Again honesty is the key. Time should be taken to sit down with the children and explain what they are going to see. Never say “grandpa has gone to sleep”.   He has not.  He has died, so why leave the child with a fear of going to sleep?. I often suggest that children bring a painting, drawing or a letter in an envelope and they can place their own private note in the casket. That is their private little thing. Or they may want to write a letter and seal it in an envelope. It makes them feel very special putting that in Grandpa’s pocket or Granny’s hand.
